Jim Johnson #85

For a couple years after Oceanics, I did some adventuring. I rock climbed a lot and I worked as  a rock climbing guide. I spent the summer of 1974 in Alaska working on a salmon troller. I also worked as a medical aid at a hospital.

I attended Mankato State University for two years and in 1977 I got an AS Degree in Emergency Care and Rescue. I then worked as a Paramedic for seven years from 1978 to 1984.

In 1978 I climbed the Troll Wall in Andelsness, Norway. The Troll Wall is the highest vertical face in Europe. It took us two days. While working as a paramedic,  I went to the University of Minnesota and got a Degree in Electrical Engineering. I worked 25 years as engineer from 1985 to 2010 and also attended St Thomas University for an MBA. I was a project engineer in the defense industry.

In 1989 I married Susan Anacker and we have two kids, a girl and a boy. I continued sailing throughout my life, sailing on Lake Superior a lot. I took two sailing trips on the Mediterranean, once in Greece and once in Italy.

I retired in 2010, joining a sailing club out of Minneapolis. We sailed Lake Superior, East Coast and  West Coast. I took several American Sailing Association classes including Bareboat and Advanced Coastal sailing on the Chesapeake and the Virgin Islands.

I chartered a 40-foot boat in the British Virgin Islands and also crewed on 45-foot boat for a month from US Virgin Islands to Trinidad. I crewed on 50-foot boat for 100 days sailing from Greece to Martinique in the East Indies.

After taking a U.S. Coast Guard Captains Course, I bought a 34-foot Pacific Seacraft Cutter named the “Lisken, ” out of Hamilton Ontario. In 2017 I sailed Lake Superior to the Netherlands. The next year I sailed the Netherlands, North Sea, Kiel Canal, Baltic, Sweden, Norway to Lofoten and then back to the Netherlands thru England, Ireland and France. In 2018 I took the Lisken down the canals of Europe (400 Locks), to the Mediterranean Sea. Once there I sailed to Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily, and then crossed Atlantic through Canary Islands, Cape Verde followed by a 17-day crossing to St.Lucia.

In 2019 I sailed from St Lucia to BVI and then on to Florida. I sold the Lisken in 2020, but I am continuing to travel, but now on land in a travel trailer. In my spare time I work as a volunteer making theater sets at Minnetonka High School. .
