Field trips

In the Gambia one field trip was to a town called Manso Konko and then the group split up and some went to a small village called Kerewan. For what it’s worth (trivia) in the television series “Roots” when Kunte Kinte ran into the character played by O.J. Simpson, the Simpson character said that he was on the way to Kerewan.

In Kerewan, Rufus, Jim Jones and Clark Shores stayed with a Peace Corps worker named Larry Fox and helped the locals build a building from mud bricks.

Back on board

While half of the students were on their field trips, the other half remained on board and did ships work. That included chipping rust, painting with red lead and then painting the hull and masts. After a week, the students switched places and they were able to go on field trips.
