Statsraad Lehmkuhl in NYC in 2001

Photos by Steve Paulus

In October 2001, the Statsraad Lehmkuhl sailed into New York harbor, less than a month after the attacks on 9/11. She was one of the first, if not the first, ship to enter the port after that date.

I was able to escape from my newsroom (just a few blocks from the ship terminal) and get on board for a few minutes, a welcome respite to my television newsroom’s coverage of the aftermath of 9/11.

I didn’t take many pictures on board, but here are some photos. This was the first time I had seen the ship since 1973.

The first picture was posted on Facebook and shows the ship sailing past Manhattan with the smoke rising from the World Trade Center site. She docked in the west 40’s, north of the devastation.
