Bergen, Norway
November 2-23, 1972 The students spent three weeks in Bergen undergoing sail training, getting acclimated and getting into the routine of work and study. The was one field trip for the students to a nearby waterfall. The Statsraad Lehmkuhl departed Bergen on Thanksgiving Day en route to the Hardangerfjord.

Odda, Norway
November 23 – December 4, 1972 The Statsraad Lehmkuhl departed Bergen and attempted to enter the Hardangerfjord, but there was too much ice so she changed course and went to the town of Odda. In Odda, sail training continued along with a lifeboat drill and other activities.

December 4-17, 1972 Stavanger was the ship’s final stop in Norway. The students continued their sail training and most of the sails were brought up from the sail locker. December 17-24, 1972 After leaving Stavanger, the Statsraad Lehmkuhl crossed the North Sea and through the English Channel not knowing that a hurricane was awaiting in the Bay of Biscay. Atlantic Ocean to Canary Islands
December 28, 1972 -January 5, 1973 After escaping from the hurricane, we sailed to the Canary Islands making landfall at Santa Cruz de Tenerife on New Year’s Day, 1973. Some students took field trips ashore.

Sailing to Africa
January 5-12, 1973 The ship departed from the Canary Islands en route to Bathurst (now called Banjul), capital of The Gambia. Summer sailed replaced the winter sails and a salt water shower was set up. Finally, the night before landfall, Trygve Johansen dazzled all of us by balancing on top of the main mast.

Crossing the Atlantic
January 27-February 12, 1973 Over two weeks at sea crossing the Atlantic Ocean, the ship was under full sail most of the time. Uneventful trip except for the crossing of the equator.

February 4-8, 1973 Crossing the Atlantic the Statsraad Lehmkuhl was under full sail most of the time. One ritual was setting the Bram and Royl seils in the morning and furling them at night.
