Crossing the equator
Friday, February 9, 1973 On February 9, the Statsraad Lehmkuhl crossed the equator at 0 degrees latitude and 43 degrees west longitude. Belem, Brazil
February 12-21, 1973 Field Trips While in Brazil the students split up into groups for field trips inland. One trip was to Tomé-Açu, a Japanese village deep in the Amazon jungle.

Caribbean Sea
March 10-15, 1973 From Belem Brazil we sailed to Trinidad where we witnessed the craziness of Carnival. From Port-of-Spain we sailed to St. Georges, Grenada, a deserted island in the Grenadines, Fort-de-France in Martinique before ending up in Sint Maarten.

Grenadines
March 6-10, 1973 After a few days in Grenada, it was off to a deserted island in the Grenadines where we launched our own sailboat, jumped off the foresail yardarm and hit the beach.

Sint Maarten
March 15-17, 1973 The island of Sint Maarten was the spot where families were told to meet the ship. Many family members came down to see their kids and the ship.

East across the Atlantic
March 17 – April 1, 1973 Leaving St. Maarten it was time for the Atlantic crossing with a stop at the Azores.

Azores
April 1-7, 1973 After crossing the Atlantic, the ship arrived at Ponta Delgada in the Azores. We stayed a week. The highlight was when the students discovered that they could rent Austin Minis with little more than a library card. It resembled a demolition derby as the students explored the island in these tiny cars.…

Cadiz, Spain
April 18-23, 1973 Our next destination was Malaga, Spain, but after trying to get through the Straits of Gibraltar for three days we changed course and sailed to Cadiz, Spain. Sailing back to Norway
April 23 – May 13, 1973 The ship sailed back to Norway with a short stop in Brest, France. Winds were good and the ship reached a speed of 16 knots in the English Channel.

Brest, France
April 30 – May 8, 1973 Field trip (Sam, Rufus & Randy) Our final foreign port was Brest, France. Randy Smith, Sam Godfrey and I went camping in the hills east of the city.
